We added dairy sheep to our Katahdin flock in 2009.
We see a lot of potential in what some of the dairy breeds has to add to meat flocks. There quick growth, prolific mothering, and heavy milk production is everything we want to see in our meat breeds.
We were very blessed to receive two hardy, adult, dairy crossbred
ewes that both gave us lovely triplets their first lambing in 2010.
Thank you so much Coleen for these gals.
Our major goal with our dairy flock is to incorporate it into our Katahdins.
Although milk is not a particular weak point of the Katahdins (they are amazing moms) the more milk we can get them to produce, the quicker those lambs are going to grow. Dairy sheep are also very prolific, a strength of Katahdins that we want to reinforce.
We also raise our dairy sheep for their milk. Another goal we have is to breed a high production dairy ewe that sheds!
Thank you Coleen for getting us started with dairy sheep and for your advice and friendship!
